Vinicius Jr Racism News

The Rio de Janeiro legislative assembly has decided to pass a law for reducing racism at football games in Brazil after the horrific racist abuse suffered by Vinicius Jr. in Spain. The Real Madrid winger has been subjected to multiple racist remarks over the 2022-23 season including a recent incident in the game against Valencia C.F.

A step like this has been taken for the first time in Brazil, where a parliament has approved a bill of these characteristics. The approved law states that football games or any other sporting events in Rio de Janeiro will be automatically stopped if there is any case of racist conduct.

The bill also includes a protocol to combat racism and issues guidelines which allow the victims of racism to present their complaints to the Prosecutor's Office or the Public Defender. At the same time, the bill also makes it mandatory to carry out educational campaigns against racism in the intervals of sporting events.

"We have to eradicate, once and for all, the cancer of racism, especially in the sports environment. This law seeks to combat racism to create an egalitarian society", deputy Professor Josemar stated. Further, the regional parliament of the State of Rio de Janeiro also decided to award Vinicius Jr. the Tiradentes Medal, which is the highest award of this legislative chamber.

Coming back to Vinicius Jr., the Brazilian international had another incredible 2022-23 season with a total of 21 goals and 20 assists across all competitions. But towards end of the season, Vini Jr. suffered a foot injury which kept him out of the last few games for Real Madrid.
