Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting on Wednesday (February 7) was named the Head Coach of the Major League Cricket (MLC) franchise Washington Freedom. However, there were speculations of the former Australian cricketer taking over the coaching roles in MLC, the deal was put on papers and confirmed, early today.
Soon after his announcement, Ponting also spoke highly of his IPL team Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2024 edition. Speaking after his appointment as head coach, Ponting also assured that Rishabh Pant will feature in the upcoming edition, however in what capacity, it is still to be decided.
“Rishabh is very confident that he’s going to be right to play. In what capacity we’re not quite sure yet. You would have seen all the social media stuff, he’s up and about and running well. But in saying that we’re only six weeks away from the first game as well,” Ricky Ponting said.
“But I’ll guarantee if I asked him now he’ll say, ‘I’m playing every game, I’m keeping every game and I’m batting at No. 4.’ That’s just what he’s like, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed,” the Delhi Capitals Head Coach further added, hailing the young Indian wicketkeeper-batter.
It is to be noted that the 26-year-old Indian cricketer will return to the field after surviving a horrific car crash in December 2022. Recalling the accident, Pant recently thought that “his time in this world is over” after that incident. However, he is currently on his road to recovery, he has been cited alongside Team India and his IPL franchise in the recent time, with his last appearance being at the Delhi Capitals’ auction table in December 2023 in Dubai.
