Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, Jay Shah on Sunday, July 7 confirmed that T20 World Cup 2024 winning captain, Rohit Sharma will lead the side in the upcoming edition of the World Test Championship (WTC) and the Champions Trophy 2025. With the WTC and Champions Trophy being the next two major assignments, Shah confirmed that Rohit will continue to lead the side after getting the T20 World Cup title after 17 long years.

“I am confident that under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, we will win the WTC Final and Champions Trophy,” Shah said in a video posted by ANI on X (formerly Twitter) while congratulating the Indian team on the T20 World Cup win. “I want to congratulate Team India for this historic win. I want to dedicate this triumph to skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, head coach Rahul Dravid and Ravindra Jadeja,” he said in the video.

“This was our third final in the last one year. We lost (to Australia, at the Oval) in June 2023. In November 2023, we scored 10 wins (in ODI World Cup), and won the hearts of the people, but couldn’t win the World Cup (India lost to Australia in the final). I had said in Rajkot (on February 14 this year) that in June 2024 that we will win the hearts of the people and also the T20 World Cup (in USA & West Indies), and plant the tri-colour (in Barbados). And our captain did it,” he further said.

“Now, our next target is the WTC final and the Champions Trophy,” he finally concluded, accidently confirming Rohit Sharma as the captain for the next two cricket majors.
