Rohit Sharma is going through one of the toughest phases of his cricketing career as he has failed to do his job as skipper and player efficiently for the last few months. Following the whitewash at the hands of New Zealand on home soil and crushing 3-1 defeat at the hands of Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he has come under fierce criticism from former Team India stalwarts. India legend Sunil Gavaskar, who is known for his outspoken attitude, has been vocal against Rohit’s poor run with both bat and leadership. Amidst these scenes, there are a few reports that claim Rohit has lodged a complaint with the Board of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI), against Gavaskar for the latter’s criticism.
According to a report published in the NDTV, the 37-year-old is upset with Gavaskar’s way of criticism. Back in November 2024, Gavaskar discussed Rohit’s unavailability from the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 due to latter's second child’s birth and said, he feels the selection committee should hand the leadership role to Jasprit Bumrah for the entire series and Rohit should take part as a player.
“I have been reading that Rohit Sharma might not play the first two Tests of the Australia series. I feel that, in that case, the selection committee should appoint Jasprit Bumrah the captain of the side for the entire Australia tour, and tell Rohit Sharma that you will participate as a player in this series. For the first Test match, Rohit Sharma has to be there." said Gavaskar on SportsTak in the past.
Gavaskar continues his acrimonious criticism following Rohit’s failure for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy game
Rohit made a comeback for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy after a decade. Against Jammu and Kashmir, he continued his disastrous run with the bat, scoring the scores of three and 28. Noting Rohit’s another failure, Gavaskar penned an article on SportsStar. He wrote, “The dismissal of Mumbai’s Test batters once again brought to the fore the perils of the all-out aggressive mode of batting that is nowadays thought of as being central to run-making. It can work on flat pitches, but on pitches where the ball is doing something, there has to be a technique good enough to keep out the good delivery.”
He also questioned Rohit’s intent in the game. He added, “Whether their hearts were in it or they did that only to ensure they were not stripped of their BCCI contracts, like Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were, after missing out on the Ranji Trophy games last year, is known only to them. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s participation meant that Ayush Mhatre, who had got a couple of hundreds and some fifties, had to be left out of the Mumbai side.”
