After losing against Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2022 quarterfinal, the Netherlands’ head coach Louis van Gaal will be replaced by former Dutch international and ex-Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman. This was Van Gaal’s third stint in the Dutch side where they remained undefeated in 2022 until the loss against Argentina.

Van Gaal rejoined the Netherlands setup in 2021 as the head coach and continued to work with the Dutch side despite being diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. He underwent chemotherapy treatment and recovered before the World Cup. As mentioned earlier, the former Manchester United manager was on a 20-match unbeaten streak since he replaced Frank de Boer.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reported the news and stated that Ronald Koeman had agreed to take the head coaching job back in April. The tweet said, “Louis van Gaal leaves Dutch national team as already planned before the World Cup. Ronald Koeman signed the contract as new head coach in April — he’s already in charge as new Netherlands manager. His return was already official.”

After the game against Argentina, Louis Van Gaal gave his farewell speech during the press conference and talked about his final term as the Netherlands coach. Van Gaal addressed his team’s undefeated record and asked the media to google ‘Louis van Gaal, Dutch team’.

He said, “First and foremost I will not be continuing. I only did it for this period of time. This was my very last match of my third term as head coach. In that time, I coached 20 matches, and we didn’t lose a single one. I do not know how many matches we won, but you can Google ‘Louis van Gaal, Dutch team’ and see the goal difference for yourself,” added Van Gaal.
