Nepal leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane was given an eight-year prison sentence after being proven guilty of rape. A single bench of Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal passed the order to the Kathmandu District Court on Wednesday.

Lamichhane also received a fine of Rs 300,000 (INR 1,87,148) while being ordered to pay Rs 200,000 (INR 1,24,765) to the victim’s family. The development was confirmed by The Kathmandu Post, which quoted Chandra Prasad Panthi, information officer at the court.
The 23-year-old was arrested after a girl alleged that he sexually assaulted her in a hotel room in Kathmandu in August last year. He was released on bail in January by a Nepal court and continued his cricketing career. But this decision generated a mixed response.

Sandeep Lamichhane was removed as the captain after the rape allegations surface while his playing ban was lifted after he was released. The 23-year-old continued playing for Nepal in major tournaments like the World Cup qualifiers and the 2023 Asia Cup. However, Scotland cricketers abstained from shaking hands with the former Nepal captain after their matches during an international tournament in Dubai.
