The Board of Control from Cricket in India (BCCI) took to their official X account to state that the likes of Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel, and Yash Dayal have been released from the Indian Test squad to play in the Irani Cup 2024. The three young cricketers were with the Indian cricket team during the second Test match against Bangladesh in Kanpur, but now, they will be leaving the national setup, to join their respective teams in Lucknow for the Indian domestic cricket competition.
Notably, the highly anticipated Irani Cup match between Mumbai and the Rest of India (ROI) is slated to begin on October 1 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Mumbai, the reigning Ranji Trophy champions from the 2023-24 season, are captained by Ajinkya Rahane, while the Rest of India will play under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy this week.
Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel, and Yash Dayal didn't play either of two Test matches against Bangladesh this month
The news of Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel, and Yash Dayal leaving the Indian Test squad from Kanpur, to join their respective Irani Cup teams in Lucknow was confirmed by the BCCI on their official X account. Their post on the matter read, “Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel and Yash Dayal have been released from India's Test squad to participate in the Irani Cup, scheduled to commence tomorrow in Lucknow.”
In the 61 previous editions of the Irani Cup, the Rest of India, who have competed in all of them, have won it 31 times, while there were two occasions when it was shared. Mumbai have been able to play in the coveted tournament match on 29 occasions, winning the trophy 14 times, while sharing it once with the Rest of India due to first innings of both the teams weren’t completed in the 1965-66 season.
