Young Indian Test batter Sarfaraz Khan has been named the captain of the Mumbai side for the upcoming Buchi Babu Tournament to kick off the 2024 domestic season. Khan is the only international player in the Mumbai squad as he made his international debut in early 2024 against England in India.
The 26-year-old in his maiden home series lived up to his run-scoring reputation with three half-centuries in as many matches as he amassed 200 runs at an average of 50.00. Sarfaraz Khan also got the nod as senior stars Ajinkya Rahane and Shams Mulani are away for other commitments.
Rahane led Mumbai to their 42nd Ranji Trophy title in the 2023-24 season with Mulani as the vice-captain. The former Indian captain is playing for Leicestershire in the One Day Limited Over Tournament while Mulani is at Bengaluru's National Cricket Academy (NCA).
Speaking about Khan being the Mumbai captain former India cricketer and MCA's Senior Selection Committee chairman Sanjay Patil, as per Mid-Day said, “There is no question of who will be captain if Ajinkya is available, but in his absence we should be ready with options and currently Sarfaraz is the senior-most and a Test player.”
