Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams receives a wildcard spot to be part of the main draw at the Australian Open 2023. This will be Venus Williams’ 22nd appearance at the Australian Open, 25 years after she made her debut at Melbourne Park in 1998. The 42-year-old is a two-time Australian Open finalist but has been away from the tournament because of injuries that restricted her participation over the past two years.
Along with her two Australian Open finals in 2003 and 2017, former world No.1 has clinched the quarterfinal stage of the event on nine occasions. In doubles, Venus along with her sister Serena Williams has won the women’s title four times – 2001, 2003, 2009 and 2010. Williams has also won the mixed doubles crown in 1998 with Justin Gimelstob.
Talking about her return to Melbourne Park, Williams expressed excitement and talked about how she has received a tremendous amount of support every time she plays in the tournament. “I am very excited to be returning to Melbourne to compete at the Australian Open in January,” said Williams.
“I’ve been competing in the country for over 20 years now and the Australian community has always supported me wholeheartedly. It will be an honour to play for the fans again and I’m looking forward to making more memories at the tournament this year,” she further continued.
Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley is also excited to Venus Williams play as she has been a fan favourite in Australia. “Venus is not just an incredible player and fan favourite, she’s a great role model and leader in our sport in so many ways,” Tiley said. “We are delighted to welcome her back to the AO in January.”
