The India women’s team have suffered a massive blow amidst the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup 2024 in Sri Lanka. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side, who kickstarted their title defense with a seven wicket win over Pakistan Women on Friday, July 19 at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla, have been handed a big blow with their star bowler, Shreyanka Patil being ruled out with an injury.
Patil, who scalped two wickets in her 3.2 overs, conceding only 14 runs during India’s win against their arch-rivals, Pakistan in Women's Asia Cup, has been ruled out of the tournament with a fractured finger. Patil picked up the injury while attempting to take a catch in the second game of the tournament. It was later confirmed that she sustained a fracture in the fourth finger of her left hand.
The Indian off-spinner had earlier suffered a hairline fracture to the same hand and eventually forced to miss a few matches for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024. However, she returned before the business end of the tournament and went up to pick a four-fer in the final to help RCB clinch their maiden title.

Tanuja Kanwar has been named Patil’s replacement in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup. The 26-year-old left-arm orthodox, was named in India’s reserves, but has got a maiden India call up with Patil forced to sit out with injury. Kanwar, who finished as Gujarat Giants’ leading wicket-taker in the WPL 2024, also made the cut for India’s upcoming multi-format tour of Australia, which is set to start from August 7.
