Two members of the Indian World Cup squad, Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer are currently recovering from recent injuries. These fitness concerns stopped the duo from playing in the Asia Cup final, which took place on Sunday. The match was a hugely one-sided affair as India obliterated Sri Lanka and sealed the game with 10 wickets and almost 44 overs to spare.

Shreyas Iyer incurred an injury just a few minutes before India’s Super Fours encounter against arch-rivals Pakistan. The Mumbai batter was suffering from back spasms and had to miss the match to make way for KL Rahul. Axar Patel, on the other hand, got injured during India’s dead rubber clash against Bangladesh on Friday. Patel suffered a strain to his left quadricep during his fighting knock of 42 (34).

After the Asia Cup final, skipper Rohit Sharma provided an update about both players in the post-match press conference. According to Amol Karhadkar, Rohit stated, “He has ticked 99% of the various parameters that were set for him. As of now, he should be good to go,” alluding that Iyer is fit and is likely to be available for selection for the Australia series.

Talking about the all-rounder, the skipper said, “He has a small tear, perhaps a week or up to 10 days. Not sure if he will be available for the first two games against Australia.”  Axar Patel’s injury is a bit severe and will take some time to recover.

India will square off against Australia for a three-match ODI series starting September 22. This will be the final series for the Men in Blue before the marquee event, the World Cup, which begins in India on October 5.
