India’s reliable middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer fell cheaply on nine runs in the season opener of Duleep Trophy 2024. The Indian domestic season kicked off on September 5 with an exciting clash between India D and India C in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. Apart from skipper Iyer’s cheap dismissal, the game also saw Devdutt Padikkal returning to the pavilion on a 4-ball duck. The opening game of the Duleep Trophy saw India C skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad winning the toss and inviting the rivals to bat first.
India D team consisting of stars like Iyer, Devdutt Padikkal and Axar Patel found it difficult to score runs and were reduced to 76 for the loss of seven wickets within 31 overs. The side lost Atharva Taide for just four runs in the first over itself before losing their skipper Shreyas Iyer in the sixth over. Devdutt Padikkal was next to return to the pavilion on a four-ball duck. Wickets kept falling for India D as Ricky Bhui and Srikar Bharat were forced to walk back after small scores of 4 and 20 runs, respectively.
Shreyas Iyer, seeking India comeback, gets dismissed for nine runs
Iyer, who was snubbed from BCCI’s central contract list earlier in the year, once again failed to perform with the bat. Iyer was dropped from the Indian Test team for the last three Tests of India’s series against England after a string of low scores couldn’t manage to do much. In the Buchi Babu Tournament, Iyer scored 2 and 22 runs.
Apart from Iyer, Devdutt Padikkal had the worst start to his Duleep Trophy campaign as the batter returned the hut on a duck. Padikkal fell prey to Vyshak Vijay Kumar’s delivery, which was caught by India C skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad.
