The Asia Cup 2023 is underway with heavyweights Pakistan and Sri Lanka dominating their openers against Nepal and Bangladesh respectively. Ahead of India's opener against co-hosts Pakistan on September 2, former Men in Blue star Gautam Gambhir weighed in on who should bat at the number 4 position for Team India and who should open the innings.

On Thursday, Sri Lanka dominated Bangladesh to win their Asia Cup 2023 opener by five wickets. While talking from the commentary box during the match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Gautam Gambhir suggested India's batting top order for the continental showpiece.

Despite many experts suggesting veteran batter Virat Kohli bat at number 4, the 2011 World Cup winner, Gautam Gambhir has a different opinion about India's batting order. Gambhir believed Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan should open the innings for India while Rohit Sharma should take the number 4 position. This will allow Virat Kohli to continue batting at the number three position.

If India play three seamers in their opener against Pakistan then they will require a reliable batter at number 4. Also, three seamers will take a batsman or all-rounder's place in the starting XI, which may lead to Shreyas Iyer's snub from the team while KL Rahul is already out for the group stage. During the commentary, Gambhir said that Ishan and Gill should open while Rohit should play at number 4 for India.

Talking about the Asia Cup 2023, both co-hosts won their respective openers and will look to continue their dominant run in the tournament. India will begin their campaign on September 2 against Pakistan at the  Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Balagolla, Sri Lanka.
