The Indian team management had issued an ultimatum to top-order batter Shubman Gill ah ead of the second Test of the five-match series against England. Gill was reportedly told this match would be his last opportunity as India's number three in Tests and the Punjab batter would be required to score runs in domestic cricket.

Responding to this instruction, the 24-year-old put forth an incredible effort and scored a crucial 104 in the second innings of the second Test after missing out in the first innings. Gill got out after scoring 34 and then showcased his batting acumen with a hard-fought ton in the second innings as India were able to set a target of 369.

But before this ton, Shubman Gill was amidst a poor run of form as he only scored 153 runs in the nine innings with the highest score of 36. Hence the Indian team management, as reported by the Indian Express, Gill was told that this would be his final opportunity at the number three position.
The report further included that Gill was even asked to play in the Ranji Trophy for his state in the break between the second and third Test to iron out the issues in his batting. Responding to this, Gill said, “I will go and play the Ranji Trophy match against Gujarat in Mohali,” to one of his family members as quoted by the Indian Express.

After the third day's play, Shubman Gill deemed the pitch at Vizag to be a tricky one with the ball turning and even finding reverse swing. Gill said, "Not an easy wicket to bat on, you have to apply yourself. The ball is turning, hopefully we can get the ball in the right areas tomorrow. It's about 70-30 at the moment, the morning session is a big one. We've seen some movement for the fast bowlers, I think if we get the ball in the right areas we'll be okay."
