The India tour of Australia saw a few players stand out, including the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Jasprit Bumrah. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul also showed some promises, but a few veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and even Shubman Gill had a forgettable outing down under.

After the completion of the five-match BGT 2024-25, several spoke of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s performance, but very less was spoken about Shubman Gill, who too failed to perform despite being backed by the Ajit Agarkar led selection committee for over a long period now. While S Badrinath threw light on Shubman Gill’s performance, former India cricketer Krisnamachari Srikkanth termed him “overrated”.

He is a highly overrated cricketer: Srikkanth on Shubman Gill

The 1983 World Cup winning player, Krisnamachari Srikkanth took an indirect jibe at Ajit Agarkar led selection committee for continuously backing Shubman Gill, who according to him is “highly overrated”. "I've always maintained that Shubman Gill is an overrated cricketer but nobody listened to me. He is a highly overrated cricketer," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel. "When Gill is getting this much of a long rope, some people might wonder whether even players like Suryakumar Yadav could have been given a longer rope in Tests," he added.

Srikkanth promotes Suryakumar Yadav, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sai Sudharsan trio amid India’s poor show in BGT

The former Indian cricketer went onto back the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sai Sudharsan, who have showed positive prospects in red-ball cricket. "Suryakumar didn't have a very good start in Tests but he has the technique and he has the ability. But the selectors and the management have now boxed him into a white-ball specialist. So that means you have to look at fresh talent," he opined.

"Ruturaj Gaikwad, for example, has been doing wonderfully in first-class cricket. But they've not bothered to pick him. Meanwhile, someone like Sai Sudharsan has been lighting it up in 'A' tours. You have to promote these kinds of talents. Instead, they are running around circles by picking Gill," Srikkanth further added, highlighting how they have continuously shown their skill in domestic cricket.
