Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid has suffered a displaced flap of the meniscus in his left knee after suffering an injury in the Sixers' 12-point loss against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday. Reportedly, the reigning NBA MVP is "considering" surgery, which would keep him out of action for an extended period.
The Sixers Big Man, who is currently averaging 35.3 points, 11.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists in 34 games this season, played 30 minutes in their road game against the Warriors at the Chase Center, scoring 14 points with 27.8% shooting from the floor and grabbing seven rebounds. Embiid struggled through the first quarter against the Warriors before heading back to the locker room to get his knee checked out.
In the fourth quarter, Embiid appeared in pain and again went back to the locker room after Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga fell on his left knee. Embiid missed the Sixers' next game against the Utah Jazz, which was his 13th game this season that he missed. In the new rule that came into effect this season, a player can miss a maximum of 17 games to remain eligible for the post-game awards.
According to The Athletic, Embiid is now considering surgery on his left knee while his team and doctors are exploring the possibilities to "rest and rehab the injury or to undergo a procedure that would lead him to miss playing for an extended period."
Reportedly, the 76ers center is "not considering" playing through injury to remain fit for the playoffs. NBA insider Chris Haynes reported after the Warriors vs. Sixers game, "Embiid came into this season with two goals - To become the best player in the game and to enter the playoffs healthy."
