Sourav Ganguly, the former India captain and BCCI President, took on his critics for doubting his decision to make Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian cricket team in 2021. When Virat Kohli was forced to give up the Indian captaincy from all formats following an early exit from the T20 World Cup 2021, Sourav Ganguly played a key part in Rohit Sharma taking over the leadership role as the BCCI President.
The transfer of captaincy wasn’t smooth in 2021 when Virat Kohli claimed in a press conference that he was removed from the role without his willingness to the contrary in the ODI format. During that particular time, Sourav Ganguly had spoken to the media about how Virat Kohli left the Indian captaincy after a mutual agreement with the BCCI when he was the President of the cricket’s governing body in India.
During his interview with Aajkaal, a Bengali newspaper, Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying, “When I handed Rohit Sharma the captaincy of the Indian team, everyone criticised me. Now that India has won the T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, everyone has stopped abusing me for it. In fact, I think everyone has forgotten that it was I who appointed him as the captain of the Indian team.”
Notably, Sourav Ganguly also spoke about wanting to become the new head coach of Delhi Capitals after Ricky Ponting left the role following his seven-year association with the franchise. He remarked, “I am planning for the next IPL. I want DC to win this time. I will speak to the management about appointing an Indian as the head coach.”
“I want to give a shot as the head coach. I will bring in some new players. Wanted to bring in Jamie Smith from England. I wanted to test him out in Delhi's SA20 franchise. He wanted to come in but the schedules did not match,” he concluded.
