Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has named his India squad for the ODI World Cup 2023. The marquee 50-over tournament is set to be played in India from October 5 to November 19 with India taking on Australia in their opening game at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai of October 8.
With the last date set to be September 5 for the squad announcement for the 50-over World Cup, the former BCCI President has made two noticeable changes in the 17-member Asia Cup squad for the marquee event. Sourav Ganguly, who was in a chat with Star Sports has decided to exclude the trio of Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and Prasidh Krishna from the squad, whereas he has included both KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer in his 15-man squad.
It is to be noted that Tilak Varma is yet to feature in ODIs for Team India, Prasidh Krishna is coming into competitive cricket after recovering from an injury. Additionally, Ganguly has picked the top order same as that of Asia Cup 2023 with Rohit Sharma leading the pack with Kohli coming in at No. 4 with KL, SKY, Shubman Gill, Iyer - all completing the top batting lineup.
Ganguly names three backups; include Chahal
The former Indian cricketer has however named three backup options for the side if there are injury concerns in the team. “If one of the batters gets injured then Tilak Varma can enter, while if the pacer gets injured then it’s Prasidh Krishna, while in case of spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal is the option,” Ganguly told Star Sports.
