Rob Walter, the head coach of South Africa men’s white-ball teams, has resigned from his role citing personal reasons, as per the Cricket South Africa (CSA). The 49-year-old has opted out of coaching South Africa in white-ball cricket two years into his four-year contract, which would have allowed him to take the team to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 at home, a tournament which they will co-host alongside Zimbabwe and Namibia.

While the reason given by the CSA in regards to Rob Walter stepping aside as the white-ball coach of South Africa is personal, the report from ESPNcricinfo stated that he was under pressure for his indifferent bilateral record. Also, he used to continually travel back and forth from South Africa to New Zealand, a country where he lives, which had its negative effects on him personally.

In the press release sent out by the CSA, Rob Walter talked about his time with South Africa men’s cricket team in white-ball formats, stating that he felt honoured and proud to be in the job for the better part of the last two years. He was quoted as saying, “Coaching the Proteas has been an incredible honour, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together.”

I have no doubt that the team will continue to grow and reach even greater heights: Rob Walter

“The players, support staff, and the South African cricketing community have been fantastic throughout this journey. While it's time for me to step away, I have no doubt that the team will continue to grow and reach even greater heights,” added Rob Walter, who is due to be 50 years old later this summer. During his time in the job, South Africa made it to the final of the T20 World Cup for the first-time last year apart from reaching the semifinals of ODI World Cup 2023 and Champions Trophy 2025.

But at the same time, under Rob Walter’s coaching, South Africa lost three of the seven ODI series apart from winning only one of the eight T20I series.
