Luis Rubiales, the President of Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is likely to submit his resignation after FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against him. Rubiales found himself in hot water after he kissed Spain women’s footballer Jennifer Hermoso on lips after Spain won their first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.
After their historic victory in the marquee event, when the players were collecting their medals, Luis bestowed a kiss upon the Spain forward. The incident provoked severe outrage within Spain and all over the world, where football fans demanded the RFEF Chief to resign.
Things got more intense when the Spain player said that such incidents should never go unpunished. According to Reuters, after Hermoso’s statement, the global football governing body, FIFA started disciplinary proceedings against the 46-year-old.
As per the latest developments, after several entities, football clubs and officials came together against him, the former football player decided to step down from his chair. The sources further state that, he voluntarily decided to step down from his role rather than getting disqualified. Though there hasn’t been any official confirmation yet, Rubiales is expected to put in papers by the end of the week.
Notably, the Spanish official entered the RFEF in 2018, after his predecessor Angel Maria Millar was found guilty in a corruption case. However, his tenure was filled with controversies, which include the dismissal of former manager Julen Lopetegui just before the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
