Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka took a dig at former Barcelona star player Gerard Pique. Wawrinka is the owner of Kosmos Group, which is a sports and media investment group that worked in collaboration with the ITF for the Davis Cup finals. Wawrinka was clearly not impressed with the empty stands in the event as it clashed with the World Cup fixture between Switzerland and France in Manchester.
The three-time Major winner took to Twitter and wrote, “Thank you @3gerardpique @ITFTennis! @DavisCup France vs Switzerland in Manchester lol.”
Meanwhile, the former footballer didn’t hold back and was quick enough to reply to the tennis star. He wrote, "Attendance last year in the group stage. You can compare it yourself, Stan. We don't organize it anymore. Ask the ITF "
However, Wawrinka, who seemingly left unsatisfied with the response of Pique, hit back and wrote, “After a bad day on court this at least made me laugh! It would be great to understand more if it was such a success last year, why the 25 years deal stopped after 5 years…”
The 36-year-old responded with “We still don’t know… let’s see what the judge says. Good luck the rest of the week.” Notably, in 2018, Pique’s Kosmos teamed up with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for the next 25 years to run the Davis Cup. However, earlier this year, it was announced that the partnership had come to an end.
Speaking of the 38-year-old tennis star, he suffered from a serious back injury in 2021 and made his much-awaited comeback in the ATP tour in 2022. The highlights of this year for Wawrinka are reaching the third round of Wimbledon as well as finishing as runner-up at the 2023 Croatia Open.
