Johnson announced Cink as his fifth and final option for the vice-captain position on Monday. Cink participated in five Ryder Cups between 2002 and 2010. Johnson stated that he has confidence in Cink to provide frank and helpful criticism as they get ready for the biennial event. In addition, he lauded Cink's level of competition, noting that in May, he came in third at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship.
Cink described this opportunity as an honour and stated that he was prepared to go above and above to support the U.S. team in keeping the Ryder Cup. He cited participating in the Ryder Cup as one of the highlights of his professional career and expressed excitement about joining the squad differently.
The U.S. team has not won the Ryder Cup on European soil since 1993 when Tom Watson led the American team to a 15-13 victory at The Belfry in England. In Italy, where they are presently the overwhelming favourites to retain the cup, the Americans will attempt to end their 30-year drought. The European team, which has prevailed in seven of the last ten Ryder Cups, will present a formidable test.
