Australia’s star spinner, Adam Zampa opened up on making a possible appearance in the longest format of the game. While he is hopeful of donning the Baggy Green cap despite his sparse first-class appearance in the recent years. Although he remains a key player in the limited-over for Australia, he believes that he could be a strong contender seeing his current form, especially during subcontinent tours.
Speaking in a podcast with Final Word, Zampa said, “I think, realistically, still a chance to play Test cricket.” “If I was playing a lot of Shield cricket right now with the way I’m bowling, the bowler I am, think I’d be fine, I’d be doing really well. The few games I have played in the last couple of years are suggestive of that,” Zampa further added.
It is to be noted that Zampa was in line to play Tests against India, but the selectors eventually opted to include Mitchell Swepson. The 31-year-old leg-spinner has played only two first class matches since 2019, both of which were for New South Wales. Further speaking of his Test appearance, Zampa also added, "Even if I do get picked in the upcoming subcontinent tours, people will say, well his record is averaging 46 with the ball, it's not good enough, people will say that I'm sure, but if I do get picked I'll know that the way I feel like I'm bowling, it'll be fine.”
Adam Zampa’s Test hopes still stay alive with Australia taking on Sri Lanka in two-match series next year. The selectors are expected to take a variety of spin-bowling options to support their key spinner, Nathan Lyon. The 31-year-old while remains the only Australian men’s bowler with over 100 T20I wickets, he currently is playing in The Hundred for Oval Invincibles.
