Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal cruised past French Luca Van Assche to make it to the ATP Challenger 2024 final. On Saturday, June 8, Nagal took down Assche in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (5) to make it to the summit clash of the marquee event. Nagal, who is currently ranked 95 in the world, would aim to earn as many ranking points as possible to get the best chance of qualifying for the Paris Olympics 2024. The draw for the men’s single event at the global tournament would be of 64.
The third seeded Indian put a tough fight and edged out Van Assche in a tie-breaker to win in straight sets. This was Nagal’s 3rd challenger semi-final in 2024, where he registered his berth for the second challenger final of the year. The Indian tennis star had suffered a disappointing first-round straight-set exit from the French Open 2024 by Karen Khachanov.
The 26-year-old has been in good form for the last week as he made to the final two of the Euro tour event. This is Nagal’s 9th overall ATP Challengers final, where he will fight for his 6th Challenger title. In the final summit of the tournament, he will be up against the winner of Alexander Ritschard-Jan Choinski semi-final clash.
Earlier after reaching the final four stage of the ATP Challenger, Nagal said, “From the end of last year and till this year probably, I have been playing my best tennis. Before that I was out for 16-18 months due to a hip surgery and end of 2022, I could play freely and without any pain.”
