Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar has made his prediction for the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series between Australia and India, starting on November 22. The 75-year-old remarked that India will once again get the better of Australia down under, and this time, they are going to secure a 3-1 win in the five-match Test series.
Notably, India are set to take on Australia in a five-match Test series for the first-time in more than 30 years after these two teams have battled in Test series with a maximum of four matches in recent years. The Indian cricket team have defeated Australia in each of the last four-match Test series with a 2-1 margin, twice at home and twice away, which will give them the confidence to prevail once again down under.
In his latest column for the Mid-Day publication, Sunil Gavaskar spoke about how the upcoming BGT Test series will be “exciting” before giving his scoreline for it. He wrote, “It’s going to be an exciting series for sure with the talent that is there on both sides and it will also show why Test match cricket is the ultimate format of our beloved game. Oh, and my prediction is a 3-1 win for India.”
The Aussies are ripe for the taking once again: Sunil Gavaskar
The former Indian captain alluded to the batting woes of Australia in the aftermath of David Warner’s retirement and said, “With their opening batting problems exacerbated after the retirement of David Warner and the middle-order also a bit dodgy, the Aussies are ripe for the taking once again.”
At the same time, Sunil Gavaskar spoke about how India need to be careful about not starting slow against Australia, which is generally the case with them on overseas tours. He wrote, “India being usual slow starters in an overseas series in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries the first Test will be crucial. That they aren’t playing proper first-class games before that as well as in the week long gaps between some Test matches could work against them.”
Gavaskar also spoke about Jaiswal’s role as an opener for India against Australia down under, and remarked, “That said, it is how schedules are nowadays for most touring sides. It is tough on inexperienced newcomers as Yashasvi Jaiswal found in South Africa last year. He came back brilliantly with over 700 runs against England at home.”
