Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara, who was a part of the Sussex County Cricket Club in England for the past three seasons, won’t be playing for them in the 2025 edition of the County Championship. The English county cricket club opted to relieve Cheteshwar Pujara out of his contract, to retain the services of Daniel Hughes, who replaced him in the second half of this season.
Notably, in the ongoing 2024 season of the County Championship, Cheteshwar Pujara played the first seven matches, making some key contributions with the bat before the arrival of Daniel Hughes to Sussex in place of him. Since then, Australian managed to become the leading run scorer in group stages of this year’s Blast T20 tournament with 560 runs, including five fifties, to help Sussex secure a home quarter-final against Lancashire on September 4.
Daniel Hughes is also going to play the remaining five matches of the County Championship 2024 season, looking to help Sussex reach first division for next season.
Taking over from Cheteshwar is not an easy task, but Dan has fitted in brilliantly: Paul Farbrace
In a statement on the official website of Sussex, head coach Paul Farbrace said the following about replacing Cheteshwar Pujara with Dan Hughes, “Taking over from Cheteshwar is not an easy task, but Dan has fitted in brilliantly and we are all delighted he will be back for the whole of next season,”
“Dan has been top-class for us on and off the field. He has brought a wealth of experience to the dressing room and has seriously helped some of our young batters with the development of their games,” Paul Farbarace added.
Moreover, Cheteshwar Pujara, who last played in Test cricket for India in 2023, isn’t picked in Duleep Trophy squads for the upcoming 2024-25 domestic season, signalling an end to his hopes of making an international return.
