Wojciech Szczesny has had one of the best redemption stories in modern football as the Polish keeper came out of retirement to play for FC Barcelona and has been instrumental in their recent success. After hanging up his boots, Szczesny received a surprise call from the Blaugrana after an injury to their first-choice goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen. Even after being signed for the club in the middle of the season, he was not used by manger Hansi Flick, who preferred using backup keeper Inaki Pena. But once Szczesny was given his first start, there was no going back for the 34-year-old who has since started almost every game for Barca.
And what’s more is that Barcelona is yet to lose a single game with Szczesny between the sticks! However, questions about the goalkeeper’s future have started to surface with the potential return of Ter Stegen nearing as Barca are going into the crucial phases of this season with many titles at stake. Szczesny current contract expires in June and it was reported that the club would offer him an year’s extension soon but another question doing the rounds is who will be Hansi Flick’s first choice keeper on Ter Stegen’s return.
If Flick decides to rely on Ter Stegen..:Szczesny speaks out about Ter Stegen's potential return
Hansi Flick and Szczesny attended the pre-match conference before Barca’s upcoming Champions League fixture against Dortmund and the same question was asked by the media to both the Barcelona representatives. Speaking about the same, Hansi Flick said, “Anything can happen in football. I can't give you a 100% answer.” Flick’s answer leaves the door open for a potential return for Marc Andre Ter Stegen soon.
As for Szczesny, he was also asked by the reporters about how he felt about this situation to which he replied by saying, “I’m here to replace Ter Stegen and help Barça. If Flick decides to rely on Ter Stegen, I will respect that…We have a great relationship” dismissing any potential rifts between the two keepers over any potential decision.
