Round 1 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup has gotten underway and what an absolute thriller of a tournament it has been so far. While one has witnessed a couple of upsets already, with Namibia and Scotland registering wins over former World Champions Sri Lanka and West Indies respectively, no team has yet secured a place in the Super 12 stage.
This means that there is all to play for even as there is just one match day remaining for Group A fixtures and 2 matchdays for the Group B fixtures. On Matchday 3, there were 2 Group A matches were staged. Fresh from a win over Sri Lanka, Namibia took on the Netherlands in the first match while Sri Lanka were up against the United Arab Emirates.
As it turned out, the Netherlands recorded their second successive win in the tournament as they beat upbeat Namibia by 5 wickets at the Simonds Stadium, Geelong. On the other hand, Sri Lanka, also tasted their maiden win and while Karthik Meiyappan's hat-trick did stop them from reaching as big a total as they would have liked, they went on to win the match by 79 runs.
So as it stands, Netherlands are at the Top of Group A, having won both their matches and with a net run rate of +0.149. They are followed by Namibia who have a win and a defeat much like Sri Lanka but boast of a better net run rate of +1.277. Sri Lanka with a solitary win and a net run rate of +0.600 is third while United Arab Emirates with 2 defeats and a net run rate of -2.028 is the fourth and the last team.
Since there were no Group B matches on the day, that table remains unchanged with Scotland and Zimbabwe placed first and second followed by Ireland and West Indies.
