After suffering a side strain during West Indies' loss to England in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 clash on Wednesday, June 19, West Indies opener Brandon King has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament. The World Cup co-hosts have named Kyle Mayers as the replacement for King in their squad.
After losing their Super 8s opener against England by eight wickets, West Indies defeated the USA by nine wickets to boost their net run rate and go above England in the Group 2 standings.
During the match against England, Windies opener Brandon Kings started off well and scored 23 off 13 including a 101-metre six off Reece Topley. On the second ball of the fifth over bowled by Sam Curran, King came out of the crease to play through the covers. However, he injured himself and received treatment from the medical staff. The 29-year-old failed to recover from his injury and retired hurt on 23 with the West Indies eventually losing the match against England.
The ICC released a statement that read, "The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 has approved left-handed batter Kyle Mayers as a replacement for Brandon King in the West Indies squad. Mayers, who has played 37 T20Is, was named as a replacement after King was ruled out due to a side strain. Mayers is expected to join the squad on Saturday."
Mayers has played 37 T20Is for West Indies and scored 727 runs at a strike rate of 140.61 with three half-centuries under his belt.
