Bangladesh has received a massive blow ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 as their star pacer Shoriful Islam suffered an injury during the side’s warm-up match against India on Saturday, June 1 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. The premier pacer now remains doubtful of taking the field in Bangladesh’s opening fixture of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Islam, who finished as one of the most successful bowlers in the warm-up match against India in New York, could not complete his four overs as he split his webbing on the bowling hand when Hardik Pandya got under a yorker, which hit back to the bowler. Followed by this blow, he was immediately taken off the field.
The 22-year-old was rushed to the hospital following a sudden swelling and later received six stitches between his palm and index finger. Furthermore, as reported by Cricbuzz, the pacer would require at least one week to recover and thus remains doubtful to participate in the side’s opening fixture, which is scheduled to be played on June 7 against Sri Lanka.
Although the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) hasn’t shared any official update on Shoriful’s injury but is said that if he fails to recover in time during the tournament, Hasan Mahmud, who is named as a travelling reserve will be included in the 15-member squad.
