In a significant development, Team India is reportedly set to tour Australia for a five-match Test series in November 2024. However, there is no confirmation on the dates of the bilateral series between top-two quality teams. Before that, Australia will also tour India in 2023 where they will play four Tests, as part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in February-March 2023.
Team India currently holds the Border Gavaskar Trophy after registering a historic 2-1 win against Australia in 2020-21. The contest saw of best performance by Indian cricketers as the visitors bounced back strongly after suffering an embarrassing defeat in the first match.
India scripted history Down Under
The Indian side landed in Australia with Border-Gavaskar Trophy already in their possession after their stunning win in 2017/18. Although they had an abysmal start to their tour as they were defeated by 8 wickets in the first Test to hand over the host 1-0 lead. However, a series of injuries made India's campaign tougher as Rohit Sharma, and Ishant Sharma were ruled out of the series due to injury concerns, while regular skipper Virat Kohli went on leave.
In the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane lead the squad, playing brilliant cricket to level the series. The third Test in Sydney ended in a draw, a game where India showed incredible fighting spirit and immense character to draw the match from an improbable situation which forced the result of the series to be decided in the fourth and final Test at the Gabba which India eventually won.
Such was the reputation of the contest, that India vs Australia Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020/21 was crowned the Ultimate Test Series by the ICC.
However, ahead of the Test tour in 2024, Team India will travel to Australia later this year to attend T20 World Cup 2022. Prior to the ICC tournament, Australia's white-ball team will tour India for a 3-match T20I series.
