The star goalkeeper of Barcelona, Marc Andre Ter Stegen has made a request to the manager Xavi Hernandez to let him start their last La Liga game of the season against Celta Vigo on June 4, Sunday at the Estadio Municipal de Balaidos, to make a new record. The 31-year-old German has equalled the record of most clean sheets, 26 with Paco Liano, the former goalie of Deportivo La Coruna, last weekend against Mallorca at the Camp Nou.
As reported by Javi Miguel of AS, Ter Stegen isn’t satisfied with tying the record and wants more. With that, he has requested Xavi to give him a full 90 minutes against Celta Vigo to become the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets across all five major leagues in Europe.
On May 28, after equalling the record with Liano, the Barca goalie was quoted as saying to the media, "Now, the goal is to overcome it. Once you are there, you have to attack it. It is not my mission, but the whole team’s. I have to admit that now I am calmer, reaching this point and not equaling the record would have been very hard."
But the upcoming match against Celta Vigo away, won’t be easy for Ter Stegen and Barcelona as their opponents are in the battle for relegation, one point ahead of Valladolid in 17th place, which will motivate them to perform above and beyond their normal levels. Also, the Catalan side will be missing the services of Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, Pedri, Alejandro Balde, and Ronald Araujo in Vigo.
Furthermore, Iago Aspas of Celta Vigo has been an arch nemesis for Marc Andre Ter Stegen for years. He has scored 10 goals against Barcelona since 2015.
