Australia had a disappointing outing at the T20 World Cup 2022. The defending champions could not make it to the knockout stages due to below-par performance in the group stage. Australia lost to New Zealand by a massive 89 runs in their opening fixture and never recovered from there. While the rain did spoil their chances to a certain extent, poor cricket was more to be blamed for the shambolic show.
Now, questions are being raised and Aaron Finch’s captaincy is at stake. Although Finch has confirmed that he is not retiring any soon, a change in captaincy is expected considering CA wants the team ready for T20 World Cup 2024. Amid all these rumours and talks, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has picked his choice for Australia’s new T20I captain.
Ponting has preferred Glenn Maxwell over anyone else saying that it will be the logical option. The former Aussie captain said that Maxwell has prior experience of leading a team having led Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL) and the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“He’s obviously done a fair bit in IPL and in BBL. I think that’s probably the logical one,” Ponting said. “I couldn’t see Pat Cummins wanting to take it on. I was a little bit surprised he took the one-day stuff on to be honest as well just with workload and stuff and how many games he potentially misses, so maybe you look to Maxy (Glenn Maxwell).
“I saw Mitchell Marsh last week had taken his name out. He said he wanted to play and not have to worry about it. I think in the current group, it probably would be Maxy.”
Notably, Maxwell was the second-highest run-getter for Australia at the T20 World Cup 2022. He scored 118 runs in the five games he played which includes a half-century against Sri Lanka in a must-win game.
