India is set to host the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, scheduled to commence on October 5. With the biggest cricketing event almost knocking on our doors, the teams have pulled up their socks and are training hard day and night to lift the coveted trophy. While the 1983 and 2011 World Cup winners are determined enough to win their third title this year, there is a big challenge that lies ahead for them. With Shreyas Iyer ’s uncertainty of playing in the marquee event, the Indian side is in search of a name that can replace the number 4 batter.
Playing at number four, the 28-year-old has an average of 47 in 20 innings. While confusion still prevails over the Indian side, here are three names that can fill in the spot during Iyer’s absence.
1. Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav is Indian team’s T20I star, and while the 32-year-old has delivered back-to-back explosive performances in the shortest format, his ODI form remains concerning. Yadav, who is currently a part of India’s T20I squad against West Indies, smashed 83 runs in the last game. The Mumbai Indians player holds a decent ODI match experience, and with Iyer’s absence from the team, he also holds a good opportunity to prove his worth in the 50-over format.
Speaking of his records, the Mumbai-born starred in 26 ODI games and scored 511 runs at an average of 24.33.
