A merican tennis legend Serena Williams has moved to the third round of the US Open after defeating World No 2 Anett Kontaveit of Estonia by 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 6-2 on Thursday. The US golf sensation, Tiger Woods was among the famous celebrities who cheered for Serena in her second round win at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Apart from Tiger Woods, actress Zendaya, supermodels Gigi and Bella Hadid, Oscar-winner Jared Leto also witnessed Serena's greatness against the second-ranked tennis player.
Woods hailed the match-winning performance of Serena Williams, who registered back-to-back wins after the 2021 French Open. Woods took to his official Twitter handle and wrote, " It was a privilege to watch greatness. Congrats @serenawilliams".
The Professional Golfers’ Association too shared a video of the crowd's reaction, which included gold legend Tiger Woods, on Serena Williams sensational win in the second round. PGA Tour tweeted, " What a night. "
After the game, Serena said, "It’s no rush … I’m loving this crowd. It’s really fantastic. There’s still a little left in me. After I lost the second set, I thought, 'Oh my goodness, I got to give my best effort because this could be it'. I just wanted to keep trying and see what I can do and just do my best. I was just really excited."
Meanwhile, Serena Williams will face Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia in her third round match at Flushing Meadows. Ajla defeated Evgeniya Rodina of Russia in the second round 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 on September 1.
