Veteran New Zealand pacer, Tim Southee on Wednesday, October 2 confirmed his decision to step down from the role of Test captain after the side’s 0-2 series defeat against Sri Lanka. Notably, the decision from Southee followed the Black Caps disheartening series loss against Sri Lanka in Galle last month.
However, the Kiwi pacer’s decision to step down from the role was made in the best interests of the team, the Black Caps confirmed that Tom Latham will take over the reigns from Southee in the longest format. It is to be noted that Southee led New Zealand in 14 Tests with a record of six wins, six losses and two draws since taking over from Kane Williamson in 2022.
I can best serve the team moving forward is focusing on my performances on the field: Southee
The 35-year-old Kiwi pacer, who called off his time as the Test captain of New Zealand, added that it was his own decision to step down from the helm as he aims to focus on his playing role. "Captaining the Blackcaps in a format that's so special to me, has been an absolute honour and a privilege. I've always tried to put the team first throughout my career and I believe this decision is the best for the team,” Southee said in a statement released by the Black Caps.
"I believe the way I can best serve the team moving forward is focusing on my performances on the field and getting back to my best, to continue taking wickets and helping New Zealand win Test matches. I will, as I've always done, continue to support my team-mates, especially the exciting young bowlers making their way on the international stage. I wish Tom all the best in the role and he knows I'll be there to support him on his journey, as he has done for me over the years," he further added.
Tom Latham to lead New Zealand in three-match Test series against India
With Southee resigning as captain of New Zealand Test team, he also stated that Tom Latham will take over the reigns and will lead the side in their next assignment. Clarifying that it was his personal decision after discussions with Gary Stead, he added that Latham will keep the team moving. "It was my decision to move aside and it's Tom's time to keep moving this team forward. [We have] got six Test matches to look forward to and I'm excited about that,” Southee said.
It is to be noted that Latham has previously led the Kiwis on nine occasions in Tests between 2020 and 2022. His next assignment at the helm will see him lead the 15-man squad in the three-match Test series against India. The two nations will play three Tests, starting October 16 in Bengaluru.
