Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, spoke at length about how they can do well in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 during the press conference ahead of their opening clash against Bangladesh in Dubai. The 37-year-old stated that the top-three, four, and five batters have to score big, which will help them post big totals on the board consistently throughout the tournament, while he stated the example of the ODI World Cup from two years ago.
Notably, India are set to play all their group stages matches of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on Thursday, February 20, starting with their first match versus neighbours Bangladesh. Following that, in just three days’ time, the Indian cricket team will be taking on arch-rivals Pakistan, while their final Group A match will be against New Zealand on March 2, to decide which two teams make the semi-final stage from the group.
Top-three, four, five batters need to get that big score for you to post a big score eventually: Rohit Sharma
On the eve of their Champions Trophy opener, Rohit Sharma was in good spirits in front of the media, and there, he talked about the importance of top order being consistent for the Indian cricket team. He was quoted as saying, as per Cricbuzz, “Your top-three, four, five batters need to get that big score for you to post a big score eventually. So, I think our top-four batters are quite experienced. And we know that once they are set, they like to get those big runs.”
“We've seen it as well when we played that ODI World Cup (in 2023), there were only a few hundreds that we scored, but we went on to score quite a few times, 350-plus scores, or 330 scores like that,” he added.
After that, the Nagpur-born cricketer detailed the need for the players to do the task at hand without focusing on milestones on an individual level. He remarked, “We will not be looking at the individual milestones and stuff like that. Whoever the two batters are in there; they have to do the job. And the guy who goes in after that has a job to do as well. So, if seven, eight of us think like that, we will end up getting the score that we are looking for. It's just about everyone contributing to the cause.”
