On Friday, June 14, Trent Boult, the New Zealand fast bowler, confirmed that the ongoing T20 World Cup will be the last in his illustrious cricketing career. The 34-year-old announced his decision during a press conference after New Zealand’s nine-wicket win against Uganda in a Group C clash in the T20 World Cup 2024, at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad.
After losing to Afghanistan and West Indies in back-to-back matches, the New Zealand cricket team lost their chance to make the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. During their third match of the tournament in Group C, the New Zealand captain, Kane Williamson, won the toss and chose to field first in tough batting conditions in Tarouba.
The fans at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy got to win a bowling masterclass from New Zealand, who made the Uganda batters seem helpless in the middle. Tim Southee, who was adjudicated the player of the match, registered figures of 3/4 in his four-over spell while bowling a maiden, while his bowling partner Trent Boult gave away only seven runs in his four-over spell, picking up two wickets while bowling a maiden.
All the five bowlers from New Zealand picked up at least one wicket while conceding runs in single digit, to bowl out Uganda for just 40 runs in the 19th over. Devon Conway got 22 off 15, staying unbeaten at the crease, chasing down the target within six overs to help the Blackcaps register their first win of the T20 World Cup 2024.
In the press conference, Trent Boult said, as per Sportstar, “Speaking on behalf of myself, this will be my last T20 World Cup. That’s all I have to say.”
“Definitely (it was) not the start we wanted in the tournament. A hard one to take. Just gutted we’re not going any further. But any time you get to represent the country, it’s a proud moment,” added Trent Boult.
