The Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Body of the UEFA has fined Croatia €105,000 for fan incidents during their Euro 2024 clash against Italy at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig. During the pulsating 1-1 draw in the Group B match, which knocked Croatia out of the tournament, some of their fans were spotted throwing objects, lighting flares, and indulging in inappropriate behaviour.
Notably, in the Group B of the UEFA Euro 2024, Croatia didn’t win any of their three matches, starting with a 3-0 loss against Spain. The next two matches ended in 2-2 and 1-1 draws against Albania and Italy, which led to them finishing in the fourth and last place in the group, exiting the tournament in the process.
The fan incidents during the Italy match led to the UEFA Disciplinary Committee fining Croatia a hefty sum of money. The statement from the HNS, the governing body of football in Croatia, about the matter read, “The Croatian Football Federation was fined EUR 105,000 for throwing objects (EUR 45,000), lighting flares (EUR 30,000) and inappropriate behavior (EUR 30,000) by some Croatian fans during the Croatia - Italy match played on June 24 in Leipzig.”
The Leipzig Police spokesperson spoke about the fan incident at the Red Bull Arena to Reuters, “On Monday morning it became known that eight so-called high-risk fans, who had already been refused entry to Germany by the Federal Police the previous day, were reported to be in the area.”
“Police forces were able to take five people into custody immediately. During the course of the day, the five were brought before a judge and preventive custody was confirmed until Tuesday morning,” they added.
It is important to note that the UEFA are yet to announce the punishment for the Croatian Football Federation.
