The 2022-23 Europa League final was filled with drama as referee Anthony Taylor made some controversial decisions against Roma. The game ended 1-1 and Sevilla were crowned Champions after winning on penalties. Footage circulated after the game of Roma coach Jose Mourinho calling the referee a “disgrace” as he approached Taylor in the garage. Mourinho has been handed a four-match suspension by UEFA as a result of his conduct during the Europa League final.

Referee Anthony Taylor issued yellow cards to 13 players, the most bookings in a Europa League game, with seven of them to Roma players, a record for a final. Mourinho criticized Taylor in his news conference after the match and was later seen confronting the Englishman and other officials as they boarded a minibus in the car parking.




Roma fans abused and attacked the referee and his family as he tried to board his flight and even caused havoc in the stadium after the game. Roma have also been banned from selling tickets to their traveling fans for one European game next season and fined 55,000 euros (£47,300) after they were charged with throwing objects, lighting fireworks, and improper conduct of their team.

Roma must also contact the Hungarian soccer federation to settle damages caused by its fans at Puskas Arena and were fined a further 80,500 euros for fan disorder and stadium organization issues in the first leg of the semifinals against Bayer Leverkusen. UEFA ordered Roma to close two sections of Stadio Olimpico totaling 6,000 seats at its first Europa League home game next season.

West Ham are also facing action as a result of the conduct of fans’ during the UEFA Conference League final against Fiorentina. Fiorentina captain Cristiano Biraghi was severely injured after being struck by an object thrown from the West Ham fans’ section of the stadium in Prague.
