Dutch manager Arne Slot’s first season in charge of Liverpool has been full of footballing triumphs as they are on track to winning their 20th Premier League title. However, Slot has taken reins of the Reds in a period where the future of a lot of their footballing stars remains in scrutiny. Big names include Trent Alexander Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk and Mohammed Salah whose current contracts are set to expire in June 2025. While Trent’s move to Real Madrid has not been officially declared, a lot of top journalists have already said that it is a done deal and only a matter of time before being official.

As of the other two names on that list, it is understood that both Van Dijk and Salah are in talks with the club over a new contract. The latest update is with regard to Van Dijk who spoke out after Liverpool’s recent shock defeat to Fulham. The Dutch centre-back, who moved to Anfield in 2018 from Southampton has been a defensive mainstay for the club and also a club captain in recent years.

Van Dijk has only lost three PL games at Anfield since joining the club 7 years ago

Talking about his contract situation, Van Dijk provided an update by saying that there is some progress when it comes to talks with the club over an extension. He said, “There is progress. These are internal discussions, I love the club, I love Liverpool, I love the fans,” reassuring the supporters that there are some positive developments in the matter. It was reported a few weeks ago that even Mohammed Salah was making good progress with his contract talks with the club.

Van Dijk remains to be one of the most important figures for the club and his performances in recent times have shown that he still has a lot to offer at the highest-levels of the game. He holds an impressive record of losing only three Premier League games at Anfield since coming to the club almost seven years ago. Therefore, it will be interesting to see whether the player and club can come to an agreement over a contract extension for the defender.
