On day 5 of the second Ashes Test match between England and Australia, a bizarre moment happened when Jonny Bairstow got run out after he wandered out of his crease. The moment led to a chorus of boos from the English fans, who were far from impressed with the Australian players and the umpires for giving the wicket-keeper batter out at the Lord’s in London. England were 193/6 in their pursuit of a 371-run target set by Australia when the controversial dismissal occurred.

It was the sixth ball of the 52nd over when Cameron Green delivered a half-tracker, which Jonny Bairstow ducked underneath. As the ball was caught by the wicket-keeper Alex Carey, he noticed that the English middle-order batter left his crease to have a chat with his captain Ben Stokes at the non-striker’s end.

The Australian saw an opportunity and he went on to throw the stumps down. Jonny Bairstow was flummoxed at what had transpired in the middle because he had considered the ball to be dead. The third-umpire Marais Erasmus was called in to make the final decision, who adjudicated that the batter was run out.

After the disapproval from the English fans at the decision inside Lord’s, social media went buzzing with their opinion about Jonny Bairstow. The cricket and football pundits also weighed in with their thoughts on the controversial call from the third-umpire.

Gary Lineker, former English footballer, and sports broadcaster, was quoted as saying on Twitter, “Very Poor from @CricketAus. That was just not cricket.”

Brad Hogg, the former Australian cricketer, tweeted about how Jonny Bairstow wasn’t attempting a run, which should have been the reason to not give him a run out. He said, “Bairstow wicket, Not Out. Spirit of cricket pushed to the boundary. Not attempting a run, end of over, scratched crease then walked for the regulation BS chat between overs between batsman.”

Meanwhile, Michael Vaughan, former captain of the England cricket team, loved the fact that Ashes is producing yet another dramatic day of cricket for everyone to see. The 48-year-old took to Twitter and said, “This is great drama … Love #Ashes cricket …”

Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher, the Liverpool legend and football pundit, in a now-deleted tweet, criticised the commentators for justifying the Jonny Bairstow dismissal. His tweet read, “Brilliant from Stokes and Broad, and the fella in the long room! Joke that the commentary team are justifying the dismissal of Bairstow, he’s not trying to gain an advantage.”
