Rajkumar Sharma, the childhood coach of Virat Kohli, addressed the rumours surrounding the former Indian captain potentially leaving the sport in the near future, stating that he won’t be retiring anytime soon despite his tough run with the bat over the past few months at the international level. The ex-coach also remarked that the 37-year-old will play for India in the ODI World Cup 2027, while sharing his belief that that he still has a lot of cricket left in him.
Notably, Virat Kohli had announced his retirement from T20I cricket after winning the coveted T20 World Cup trophy for the first-time in his career earlier this year. After that, his returns in the three-match ODI series versus Sri Lanka were far from good, while in the ongoing season of Test cricket, Virat Kohli has scored just one hundred and a fifty in 15 innings with a lot of scores in single digits, which is far from his usual standards at the international level.
I believe that Virat will play cricket for five more years: Rajkumar Sharma
While speaking to Dainik Jagran in an exclusive interview, Rajkumar Sharma was quite happy with Virat Kohli’s batting form, reminding everyone about his recent hundred in the first BGT Test against Australia. He was quoted as saying, as per Hindustan Times, “Virat Kohli is playing the best cricket of his career. He also scored a century against Australia in the first Test. I believe two more centuries will come from his bat in the next two matches. This is a player who has always enjoyed his game. When a player enjoys his game, he gives his best. Virat's form is not a matter of concern. This player knows how to bat in difficult situations and make the team win.”
After that, the ex-coach of Virat Kohli also addressed the future of his former disciple in cricket, and remarked, “Virat is still very fit and not too old to retire. I believe that Virat will play cricket for five more years. Virat will also be seen playing in the 2027 World Cup. The rapport between Virat and me is very good. I have known him well since Virat was not even 10 years old. I have been with him for more than 26 years. That is why I can say that Virat still has a lot of cricket left in him.”
Just a day ago, Ravichandran Ashwin announced his shock retirement from international cricket, and it has led to speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s future in Indian colours because of their recent lean patches with the bat.
