Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter Ikram Alikhil injured his finger against Sri Lanka in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. Playing in Pune, Afghani captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and invited the Lankans to bat first. After just four runs in the first over, Sri Lanka continued their cautious start with four dot balls in the second over.

The fifth ball saw Dimuth Karunaratne drive the ball towards the covers. Fielding this shot, Rahmat Shah threw the ball towards the striker's end where  Alikhil didn't have a clean grab as he he hurt his finger. Soon, the physios were in the middle as the Afghanistan wicketkeeper was in dire pain.

As  Ikram Alikhil  didn't seem completely fit, he soon walked back to the dressing room and opening batter  Rahmanullah Gurbaz took the gloves.  Gurbaz kept in the first few games of the World Cup before  Alikhil  was brought into the team for the game against England in Delhi. Afghanistan won that game in historic fashion and scripted a massive upset.
