With 15 goals in 17 regular season games, San Diego Waves forward Alex Morgan claimed the 2022 golden boot in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and on Sunday night scored a late winner in the playoff match against Chicago Red Stars to drive her team into the semifinals.

San Diego Waves came from behind to beat Chicago Red Stars 2-1 at the Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday to set up their semifinal clash against Portland Thorns at the Providence Park on October 23.

Chicago Red Stars striker Yūki Nagasato scored the first goal of the game in 10th minute to give the lead to her side over the hosts. However, Waves midfielder Emily van Egmond broke the deadlock for the home side after an hour mark on the clock to force the match into extra time. The two-time World Cup winner, Alex Morgan pulled off a clutch play in the 110th minute to take her team to the NWSL semifinals in their first league appearance.

Waves forward Sofia Jakobbson passed the ball to the 2012 Olympic gold medalist, who scored a left-footed shot from the left edge of the box that grazed past goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, who is Morgan's USWNT teammate.
