Former Arsenal star Alexandre Lacazette and 20-year-old French forward Elye Wahi, both scored four goals in a Ligue 1 match, but it was the former France forward, who struck a hattrick to pull off a 5-4 comeback over Montpellier on Sunday. It was the first time two French league teams had a player scoring at least four goals in a match since Reims beat Monaco 8-4 in 1974.

After Lacazette opened the scoring in the 31st minute, Montpellier's Elye Wahi scored four goals to put his side 4-1 up after 55 minutes and becomes the first MHSC player ever to score a quadruple. Only Olivier Giroud with 21 in the club's title-winning season of 2011/12 - has ever scored more than Wahi's tally of 17 in a single top-flight campaign. Wahi scored four inside a span of just 15 minutes to become the first player in Ligue 1 to do the quadruple since Kylian Mbappe in 2018.

The record did not stay with Wahi for long as Alexandre Lacazette scored the winner in the 100th minute to complete his quadruple too. Lacazette scored four for the first time in his career and is now on par with PSG’s Kylian Mbappe in the Ligue 1 goal tally with 24 goals.

Watch Lacazette and Wahi's quadruple:

Dejan Lovren got a goal in the 70th to make the score 3-4, and Lacazette equalised shortly after he completed his hat trick in the 84th minute. Lacazettes quadruple was Lyon's first individual four-goal haul since Bernard Lacombe scored four against Bastia in 1975, more than 48 years ago.

Lyon is now nearing a European place as the win has put them seventh in the table just three points behind fifth-placed Lille and will next face Clermont Foot on Sunday, May 14. On the other hand, Montpellier are placed 12th with 43 points in 34 matches and will next host Lorient at the  Stade de la Mosson.
