Sri Lanka are taking on Bangladesh in a must-win game in the ICC ODI Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Earlier in the match, Bangladesh won the toss and invited the Lankans to bat first. After three early jolts, veteran batter Angelo Mathews was the fourth one in a controversial attempt.

Just after the second ball, Angelo Mathews walked out to take the crease after Sadeera Samarawickrama’s dismissal. However, he took the field, but Matthews brought the wrong helmet with a sub running in with the correct helmet. This phenomenon did not sit well with the umpires as Bangladesh appealed for a time-out.

However, the Sri Lankan batter tried to explain the situation to the Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan but the team did not withdraw their appeal and Erasmus and Illingworth called for a timed out wicket. With this, Mathews registered an unwanted feat by becoming the first player to be timed out in international cricket.

As per the ruling from MCC, “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”
