In an important Laliga clash on Saturday night, Atletico Madrid defeated Rayo Vallecano by 1-0 courtesy a goal from Koke. But despite the incredible win, the talking point of the match was around the incident which took place in the 85th minute. The visitors had earned a throw and as the ball was sent towards Angel Correa, the attacker seemed to have given a nudge to his opponent player resulting in obvious foul.
But much to the surprise of everyone, referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero showed him a straight red card with Correa also not debating the decision. It left everyone confused as to what happened on the field, since the foul by Argentine as not enough to get him the marching orders.
The referee also explained his decision to some of the Atletico players who also accepted it, which suggested that Correa indeed deserved to be sent off. But what actually happened? Well, the mystery was cleared when referee submitted the match report.
Correa could potentially face 4-match ban
Notably, after the referee blew whistle for the foul, Correa shouted at the referee and said ‘La concha de tu madre!’ which is regarded as a very strong insult in Spanish which is vulgar, disrespectful and unacceptable in the country.
The Argentine is set to miss Atletico's next match against Alaves due to suspension but things could go worse for him. The incident will be investigated by the referee's committee and the disciplinary panel and as reported by Diario AS, Correa could be handed a 4-match ban which would rule him out of the clashes against Mallorca, Espanyol and Granada as well.
If such is the case, manager Diego Simeone won't be a happy man to lose out an important player for league games during such a crucial phase of the season. Correa has 12 goals and 6 assists to his name in 40 appearances across all competitions this season.
