After enforcing the follow-on against Pakistan in the second Test of the two-match series in Cape Town, the South African bowlers found it difficult to break the opening stand between captain Shan Masood and Babar Azam under the sun on day three. During the final session, a frustrated Wiaan Mulder threw the ball at Babar Azam’s body after the latter played a defensive stroke towards him, which made the former Pakistan captain aggressively react at him.

The incident between Babar Azam and Wiaan Mulder happened on the fourth ball of the 32nd over of the Pakistan second innings when they had reached 141/0. After throwing the ball at Azam’s shin, which was padded up, Mulder shouted at him, “You were out of the crease,” and it didn’t please the 30-year-old, who called him out for the throw before the on-field umpires got involved to cool off the situation between both the players.

The exceptional opening stand of 205 runs between captain Shan Masood and Babar Azam, which was broken by Marco Jansen, came after South Africa bowled out Pakistan for 194 runs in their first innings. The follow-on was enforced by the Proteas after they had taken a mammoth first innings lead of 421 runs after scoring 615-run total in their first innings, thanks to a double hundred from Ryan Rickelton, apart from hundreds from captain Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne.

South Africa are currently leading the two-match Test series 1-0 with a narrow win by two wickets against Pakistan at the SuperSport Park in Centurion last month. They will be looking to take the nine remaining wickets in the second innings of Pakistan at the Newlands in Cape Town as early as possible, to secure a 2-0 series whitewash at home before heading to Lord’s in London to play the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June.
