Duke pulled off a sensational upset in the college basketball season opener against Clemson on Monday night as the Blue Devils ended the Tigers' five-game head-to-head winning streak by 28-7 at home. This was Duke's first victory over Clemson since 2004 and the home fans absolutely loved their team's historic performance and rushed toward the field to celebrate with the athletes.
Last season's ACC champions, Clemson, who lost to Tennessee in the Orange Bowl to end the year, set up a new offense under coordinator Garrett Riley and quarterback Cade Klubnik this year. On the other hand, the Blue Devils finished 9-4 last season and now have won three straight games.
Duke quarterback Riley Leonard ran for 98 yards and threw for 175 to help the Blue Devils upset No. 9 Clemson at the Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, North Carolina. After registering one of their biggest wins in Duke football's history, the home crowd stormed the field to celebrate with the players and staff while the Tigers' appeared to be disappointed after maintaining the ball possession for 33:33.
Watch Duke fans storm the field:
As quoted by ESPN, Blue Devils second-year coach Mike Elko said in his postgame, on-field interview, "This is what I envisioned Duke could be when I took this job." He added, "It's important on the outside because I think it makes people believe a little bit more what we've been saying since the day I got here. What we've been saying internally is this is what Duke football is capable of. We've never ever wavered."
